What is the Best Height for a Meditation Cushion

The best height for a meditation cushion depends on your height and flexibility. In general, taller people will need a taller cushion, and people with less flexibility will also need a taller cushion.

Here is a general guideline:

  • Height 5'0" - 5'6": 4 to 5-inch cushion
  • Height 5'6" - 6'0": 6 to 7-inch cushion
  • Height 6'0" and above: 8 to 9-inch cushion

People with less flexibility may want to choose a taller cushion, even if they are shorter. This will help to elevate their hips and make it easier to sit with a straight back.

To test your level of flexibility, sit on the floor in the cross-legged posture with no cushion at all. If your knees stay up in the air, your flexibility is limited. If your knees go down toward the floor, your flexibility is good.

It is also important to consider the type of meditation you will be doing. For example, if you will be doing zazen meditation, you will need a zafu cushion, which is a round cushion that is typically 7-inches high.

If you are new to meditation, it is a good idea to start with a taller cushion. You can always adjust the height of the cushion by sitting on a folded blanket or towel. As you become more comfortable and flexible, you can switch to a shorter cushion.

You want to choose a size that most closely fits your needs. With a buckwheat hull cushion, you can remove some of the hulls to reduce the height. But you want to get a cushion that is close to the size you need to begin with so it doesn't lose its shape if you need to take hulls out.

The most important thing is to choose a cushion that is comfortable for you to sit on for long periods of time. You should be able to sit with a straight back and your knees at a comfortable height.

Here are some additional tips for choosing a meditation cushion:

  • Choose a cushion that is made from a firm material, such as buckwheat hulls or kapok.
  • Choose a cushion that is the right size for your body.
  • Choose a cushion that has a removable cover so that you can wash it.

Once you have found a meditation cushion that you are happy with, be sure to use it regularly. Meditation is a practice that takes time and effort, but it is well worth the benefits.
