Staying Calm in Times of Change and Difficulty

Posted by Jay Suthers on Sep 4th, 2025

When facing times of change and difficulty, maintaining a sense of calm is essential for navigating challenges and preserving your well-being. This can be achieved through a two-part approach: focusing inward and remaining present. By cultivating these practices, you can create a sanctuary of peace within yourself, regardless of external circumstances.

The Power of Turning Inward

Turning inward means shifting your focus from the chaos of the outside world to the quiet sanctuary of your inner self. Think of your home as a physical representation of this inner space. Just as you create a comfortable and organized living environment, you can do the same for your mind.

  • Create a routine: A predictable schedule provides a sense of stability when everything else feels uncertain. This doesn't need to be rigid; it can be as simple as having a morning coffee ritual or a set time for exercise each day.
  • Engage in hobbies: Reconnecting with activities you enjoy, whether it's reading, gardening, or painting, can provide a much-needed mental break. These activities serve as anchors, grounding you in the present moment and fostering a sense of control.
  • Practice self-care: Prioritize your physical and mental health. This includes getting adequate sleep, eating nutritious meals, and incorporating gentle movement into your day. These small acts of kindness toward yourself reinforce a message of self-worth and resilience.

The Anchor of the Present Moment

Living in the present moment is a powerful antidote to both the sadness of the past and the anxiety of the future. The past is a source of regret and pain, while the future is often filled with "what if" scenarios that create stress. The present, however, is the only moment you have direct control over.

Releasing Past Sadness

Sadness from the past often stems from dwelling on what's already happened. By focusing on the present, you can acknowledge those feelings without letting them consume you. Mindfulness techniques, like focusing on your breath, can help you gently redirect your thoughts away from past hurts and toward your current experience. This doesn't erase the past, but it prevents it from dictating your present state of mind.

Calming Future Anxiety

Anxiety is largely a fear of the unknown. When you're present, you're not lost in worries about what might happen tomorrow or next week. Instead, you're grounded in the "now." This allows you to recognize that, in this moment, you are okay. Focusing on the current task or a single sensory detail—like the feeling of the sun on your skin or the sound of birds chirping—can quiet the mind's incessant chatter about the future.

By consistently bringing your attention back to the present, you build a mental muscle that helps you navigate difficulties with a clear mind and a calm heart. It is the steady practice of staying here, now, that allows you to weather life's storms with greater peace and resilience.
